I have tried to keep it short, but I do love story of the Lotus...
The lotus flower is a symbol of spiritual growth and ability to overcome obstacles on the path to enlightenment.
It grows through muddy waters into a beautiful flower. When it rains, the droplets do not stick to the petals but rather fall peacefully back into the water. The lotus maintains its peace, beauty and purity through all obstacles it faces. It does not allow itself to be distracted from the external world.
The layers of petals in the large bloom symbolise different layers of the consciousness or the self. These petals grow from a central pod attached to a long stem which rises through the water. Inside these pods you find the seeds. These seeds (sometimes also known as Bodhi seeds) are used in many ways and have religious and cultural significance to most eastern religions, including Buddhism and Hinduism.
In Sanskrit, "Bodhi" translates to “enlightened” or "awakened," meaning that the bodhi seed means “enlightened seed.” Bodhi is also a term in Buddhism to reflect a Buddha's understanding of the true nature of things.
Bodhi beads are Buddhist prayer malas that are used for counting while reciting a mantra. And while the Chinese word for bodhi beads means Bodhi Tree (Ficus religiosa), bodhi beads are not made from the Bodhi tree. Bodhi seed does not refer to any particular plant but rather to seeds and fruits of various plants used to make prayer beads.
